Congratulations! City University Malaysia’s Culinary Chef Lecturer, Rachel Yong has recently won the Bronze Award in the Professional Chefs Category: Dress the Cake category with an entry called ‘Turning tides, Ocean Dreams’. The Competition was held on the 10th -13th October 2019 at the Selangor International Culinary Festival 2019 at MITEC Kuala Lumpur.

Passionate in the world of Culinary Arts and Pastries since childhood, Rachel Yong graduated with a Diploma and Bachelor's Degree in Culinary Arts from a renowned University. In April 2018, Rachel started her academic career as a Culinary Chef Lecturer teaching Baking and Pastry in the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism, City University Malaysia. Whilst juggling her packed schedule teaching and mentoring students, Rachel also manages baking classes during her weekends. The income from her business helped to finance her Masters in Hospitality Program which she is currently pursuing.

"I love watching reality shows like ‘The Next Great Baker’ and ‘The Cake Boss’." said Rachel

As a 28-year-old lady, being busy is not an excuse for her to develop talents and skills. Rachel manage to participate in Selangor International Culinary Festival 2019 with just one week of preparations. In the ‘Dress The Cake Category’, the participants must decorate a total of 16 cupcakes with their own themes and present their creations within 75 minutes.

"Being an educator is my choice and I have to sacrifice a little bit of my time for my business. I am not someone who is all about the money, as long as my career as an educator gives me satisfaction, I will continue to serve. I'm happy to see my students successfully make beautiful, meticulous cakes and Pastries." said Rachel.

"City University has given me a lot of bittersweet experiences throughout my venture as a lecturer and my dream is to bring City University’s Culinary Art students to Global Heights in the Pastry world."
