City University Malaysia, Petaling Jaya, 21 August 2018 : -
To encourage the growth and improve the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in all universities and construction industries, City University Malaysia hosted a 3-day BIM contest which was open to students and the public. This event was organised by Glodon Malaysia, together with BuildingSMART Malaysia, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and BIM Institute of Malaysia.
At the opening ceremony of this event which was held on 14 August 2018, :
“BIM application improves communication and operational efficiency. It heavily cuts down the cross referencing and approval time during the project’s construction phase leading to greater improvements in productivity and quality of work. Increased productivity in turn directly reduces the overall project construction time and costs,” said Assoc. Prof Ramli Abdullah (Dean, Faculty of Architecture and Built Environment of City University Malaysia).
The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. John Rodgers, Chairman of BuildingSMART Malaysia; Sr Dainna Baharuddin (CQS, FRISM, FRICS), Director of Basar & Harun Sdn Bhd; Mrs. Hafizah K. Muhammad Kunni, Secretary General from BIM Institute of Malaysia; Mr. Victor Lee, Branch Manager of Glodon Malaysia; Prof Dr. Azhar Md Adnan,l Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of City University Malaysia; Assoc. Prof Ramli Abdullah, Dean and Ar Kalsom Mohamad, Senior Lecturer, both also from the Faculty of Architecure & Built Environment, City University Malaysia.
The BIM Contest 2018 was held for two (2) days, whereby 15th August was for participants from universities, and the following day (16th August) was for industry professionals, By taking part in this competition, contestants gained various benefits such as new knowledge in digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. They also had the opportunity to make real connections with the industry players and improve their career prospects.
At the end of each day, their projects were evaluated by three chosen judges, armed with extensive industry knowledge and experience. One of judges was the Ar Zamri Ismail, Lecturer from the Faculty of Architecture & Built Environment of City University Malaysia, who also represented BIM Institute of Malaysia. He was joined by two other judges, notably Dr. Harris Ismail, the Vice Chairman for BuildingSMART Malaysia and Mr. Chew Siak Kor, the Service Manager for Glodon Software Sdn Bhd.
The use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) application is nothing new for all construction industry players. It brings a complete transformation by helping a construction project move from the design desks to physical reality.
Undoubtedly, BIM prunes redundant data, erases communication lag and noise, maintains updated information, brings operational efficiency, improves coordination among departments and gives an overall efficiency to the whole life span of the project.
City University Malaysia wishes to congratulate all those who had taken part in this BIM Contest 2018. The list of winners for both categories (university students and industry professionals) will be announced at a later date by the organisers.
