City University Malaysia organizes another donation drive for the homeless community
City University Malaysia, Petaling Jaya, 25 May 2018 : -
City University Malaysia’s Charity Club was back with another of its Corporate Social Responsibility Programme called “Street Charity 3.0”. This charity event which is organized annually under the direct supervision of the University’s Student Affairs Department, enabled the Charity Club to collect toys, shoes and money (which was used to purchase food and drinks) for the homeless community.
For about two weeks, and as part of a collaborative effort with the Student Representative Council (SRC) since 10 May 2018, collection boxes were stationed at strategic spots in City University Malaysia’s PJ Campus for its academicians, students, management and service staff to drop their donation items. These items were then distributed to the homeless community on 25 May 2018.
Ms Nor Saleha Ismail, Program Director, said :
“We are grateful for the generosity and kindness showered by the people of City University Malaysia. A little goes a long way in helping the less fortunate community.”
It included 23 volunteers from City University, mainly local & international students including staff members, who gathered at City University in the morning for registration and a short briefing session before moving on to the first distribution point at Masjid Jamek, Kuala Lumpur. After spending an hour distributing clothing items and food to the homeless individuals and families, they went to the next and final location at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim City Centre.
Ms Peng Min, an international student from China studying at City University Malaysia said :
“It’s hard for us to imagine the fear and hardship people face but there are many ways for us to help them. I love this program as we are not only giving help to the needy but also building and strengthening community bonds at the same time.”
Since the very first “Street Charity 1.0” event in 2016, City University Malaysia’s Charity Club, with its local and international volunteers have provided assistance to nearly 2,000 homeless individuals on various items such as food, clothing, haircuts and others. Our volunteers will definitely be back with the next round soon.
